Seborrheic keratosis is a medical term used to define a benign dermatological condition characterized by the presence of harmless skin lesions appearing during the adulthood. Exact etiology is not known but sunlight has been attributed to be the most common cause of seborrheic keratosis. Non-sunlight exposed areas can also show appearance of these warts in some cases. Genetic alterations in genes encoding for epidermal growth factor receptors have been identified. It also has some familial tendency. It occurs commonly in pregnant women. It resembles a dab of candle wax on skin and non-contagious in nature.

Light brownish macular lesion, flat and sharply defined in appearance is how seborrheic keratosis lesions initiate. They may be more numerous or few in number. Lesions have their color ranging from light tan to brown to black. They change their appearance from velvety to verrucous surface as they grow constituting an important symptom of seborrheic keratosis.
